Power BI MCP Server

Ask your Power BI data questions in plain English

The Enabler BI Power BI MCP Server connects Claude to your organization's Power BI semantic models. Leaders ask business questions in everyday language and get answers built from your governed data, with your existing Power BI security applied to every query.

What it is

A secure bridge between Claude and Power BI

The Power BI MCP Server is a secure bridge between AI assistants and Power BI. It uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude use external tools and data sources safely.

Once connected, Claude can read a business-friendly description of your semantic model, write the right Power BI query (DAX) for your question, run it against your model, and explain the result. There is nothing to install: the service is hosted by Enabler BI and you add it to Claude with a web address.

How it works

From question to answer in five steps

  1. You ask a question in Claude, for example "What was revenue by region last quarter?"

  2. Claude reads the model guide that Enabler BI prepares for your semantic model: tables, measures, business definitions, and approved example queries.

  3. Claude writes a DAX query, and the server checks it for safety before anything runs.

  4. The server runs the query in Power BI as you, using your own Microsoft sign-in, so your permissions and row-level security apply.

  5. Claude turns the result into a clear answer, table, or summary.

Key capabilities

What Claude can do with your models

Model catalog

See which Power BI models are available to you.

Model guide

Tables, measures, relationships, business terms, and verified example queries, curated by Enabler BI for accurate answers.

Value lookup

Look up real values in a column, such as region or product names, so filters are exact.

Query validation

Check a query before running it, and get clear corrective messages when something is wrong.

Query execution

Run read-only DAX queries and receive the results.

Built for decisions

Answers are summaries, not bulk data extracts; results are capped per query (1,000 rows by default).

Security and privacy

Your data, your permissions, your sign-in

Your identity

You sign in with your normal Microsoft work account, including multi-factor authentication and your organization's conditional access policies.

Your permissions

Every query runs as you. You can only query models you already have access to in Power BI, and row-level security applies exactly as it does in the Power BI service.

Read-only

Queries are read-only. The service cannot change your data, reports, or models.

Approved organizations only

Your organization must be approved by Enabler BI before any of its users can connect, and each organization's models and data are kept separate.

Hosting and records

The service is hosted on Microsoft Azure in the UAE North region. It does not store query results. For audit purposes it records who ran a query, on which model, the query text, the number of rows, and the duration.

AI provider

Query results are returned to Claude so it can answer you, so they are handled under your organization's agreement with Anthropic, the provider of Claude.

Standard licensing

Works with Power BI Pro. No Premium, Fabric, or XMLA endpoint is required.

Connect in Claude

Add the connector in Claude

Use these steps if you are an individual Claude user, or if your Claude workspace owner has not already added the connector for your organization.

  1. In Claude (claude.ai or the Claude desktop app), go to Customize > Connectors.
  2. Click "+", then "Add custom connector".
  3. Enter a name, for example "Enabler BI Power BI".
  4. In the remote MCP server URL field, enter: https://pbimcp.enablerbi.com/mcp
  5. Click "Advanced settings" and enter the OAuth Client ID: 16652fbc-beec-4fb5-ba93-de048c91a631 Leave OAuth Client Secret empty.
  6. Click "Add", then click "Connect" and sign in with your Microsoft work account.
  7. In a chat, click the "+" button at the lower left, select "Connectors", and turn on the Enabler BI connector.
  8. Then ask a question, for example: "What models can I query?" or "Show total sales by month for this year."

Good to know

  • Custom connectors are available on Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. The Free plan is limited to one custom connector.
  • Add the connector on claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app; it is then available in the Claude mobile apps as well.
  • To remove it, go to Customize > Connectors, find the connector, and choose Remove.

For Claude Team and Enterprise owners

Add it once for your whole organization

Owners can add the connector once for the whole organization, so members only need to click Connect.

  1. Go to Organization settings > Connectors.
  2. Click "Add", hover over "Custom", and select "Web".
  3. Enter the remote MCP server URL: https://pbimcp.enablerbi.com/mcp
  4. Open "Advanced settings" and enter the OAuth Client ID: 16652fbc-beec-4fb5-ba93-de048c91a631 Leave the secret empty.
  5. Click "Add". Members then go to Customize > Connectors, find the connector, and click "Connect" to sign in with their own Microsoft account.

Example questions

Try asking

  • "What was our revenue this quarter compared with the same quarter last year?"
  • "Which five regions grew fastest this year?"
  • "How many active customers do we have by segment?"
  • "Explain what the Net Revenue measure includes."

Onboard your organization

A short, guided onboarding

The service is available to organizations that Enabler BI has onboarded. Onboarding is a short, guided process:

  1. Contact Enabler BI at info@enablerbi.com.

  2. Your Microsoft Entra administrator approves the Enabler BI application for your organization, using consent links we provide. This is a standard one-time approval; nothing is installed in your environment.

  3. Your Power BI administrator confirms that the tenant setting "Semantic Model Execute Queries REST API" is enabled (it can be limited to a security group).

  4. Users who will ask questions are given Read and Build permission on the semantic models they need.

  5. Enabler BI prepares the model guide for each semantic model, so answers use your business definitions.

  6. Your users connect in Claude using the connection steps above.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Which AI assistants are supported?

Claude is supported today on the web, desktop, and mobile apps. For other MCP-compatible assistants, contact info@enablerbi.com.

Do I need Power BI Premium or Fabric?

No. The service works with Power BI Pro and uses the standard Power BI query API.

Can Claude see all of our data?

No. Each query runs as the signed-in user, so Claude can only reach the models and rows that person can already see in Power BI.

Can it change our reports or data?

No. The service only runs read-only queries.

Why do I need to enter an OAuth Client ID?

It identifies the Claude connector to Microsoft sign-in. It is a public identifier, not a password.

I see a sign-in or permission error. What should I do?

Make sure you are using your work account, that your organization has been onboarded, and that you have Build permission on the model. If the problem continues, contact info@enablerbi.com.
